Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024: All The Biggest Announcements

By Darryn Bonthuys on August 20, 2024 at 1:38PM PDT

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Gamescom: Opening Night Live has officially wrapped, bringing to a close two hours of announcements, reveals, and plenty of gameplay trailers for upcoming games. The big takeaway here is that the next couple of months are going to be very busy, as several studios and publishers confirmed release dates for their titles.

There were also some big surprises that somehow didn't manage to leak before the livestream kicked off, as a teaser trailer for Borderlands 4, a release date reveal for the Indiana Jones game, and the wonderfully weird Infinity Nikki got its moment in the spotlight.

In case you missed all the announcements, we've rounded them up below for you, and for more details, you can click through the links for a more in-depth breakdown of everything that was announced, or you can click the YouTube link here for archived the livestream of Opening Night Live.

Horrid across the board, who would have guessed. The wait is almost over though, 2025 will be a new beginning and Nintendo will return to save the industry from itself.

@stickemup: What's ridiculous is how much our standards for the medium have tanked, and pretending that's not the case is exhausting. I used to be excited for these events, many years ago, now I can't even watch them live anymore, it's slop after slop.

I just skip through the VOD, giving every game a honest chance to impress and walking away feeling nothing. There was frankly nothing of value in this entire thing, and I'm not surprised anymore. It's what I expect. Every year, I mostly turn to old games and obscure games that receive little to no marketing, because mainstream modern gaming has no flavor.

Historically, at the start of a new console, Nintendo usually shows up with fresh and interesting games that understand the strengths of the medium, when the rest of the industry is busy making another pile of generic murder simulators, uncanny valley movie games, and limp pretentious cozy games without soul. Will they be able to pull it off again in 2025? I hope so, that's all.

@Tiwill44: You're 100% correct. There are ZERO standards from consumers in regards to games. I blame younger generations for this (on the consumer end) because they never experienced a game industry that respected their customers.

Thinking that monetizing the hell out of a full price game is normal, that a game can launch broken because it'll be patched eventually, being ok with content stripped from a game to be sold separately to you, and "acceptable losses" when it comes to buying digital games. People, in general, lack the will to vote with their wallets in this industry. I'm averaging buying a single game per year at this point.

@Vodoo: Same. I find myself buying only buying the sequels to older games that I loved. Out of this whole bunch, the only thing enticing to me is maybe Borderlands 4 and Civ 7. Mafia might be cool too.

I don't even need to see promo material about any new WoW stuff because I already know its there and it's the same game it's always been.

The new IPs did pretty much nothing for me, and my first questions when I do see anything decent are "How much more will I possibly need to spend outside of just the price of the game?" and "Is it going to be a live-service MMO-lite with tons of content barriers and paywalls?" because that's all companies want to churn out these days.

@wreckfromtech: I haven’t been on IGN in a long time, but GameSpot will have 3 ads overlapping on the bottom, while another ad plays at the top of the page; and that’s after clicking away the big ad you sometimes get when you first go to a new page. Lol.
