Exploration is key in Black Myth: Wukong. The game doesn't have a map, and many objectives aren't made clear to you at the start. As such, you might find yourself wandering around to complete certain tasks. One of these quests takes place in the Flaming Mountains, where you'll go from underground lava flows to scorching peaks in search of a hidden realm. Here's our guide to help you with the Chapter 5 secret area in Black Myth: Wukong. Likewise, please be reminded that this article contains spoilers.
Black Myth: Wukong Chapter 5 secret area - Bishui Cave
Unlocking the Black Myth: Wukong Chapter 5 secret area involves multiple steps. Here's a quick summary:
- Talk to the Pale-Axe Stalwart, a miniboss who's revealed to be an ally.
- Find the Five Element Carts in this region.
- Look for the Pale-Axe Stalwart whenever he moves to a new location.
- Break open the ice door in the Cooling Slope.
Once you gain access to the Bishui Cave in Black Myth: Wukong, you'll have to prepare for additional boss battles. Thankfully, there are some nice rewards that can be yours during your trek.
Pale-Axe Stalwart: Starting the Chapter 5 secret quest
Woods of Ember: Ashen Pass I - From the first shrine in this region, proceed to the main path until you come across a Bull General miniboss. This is actually the Pale-Axe Stalwart NPC. Once you defeat him in battle, you can chat with him so he can tell you about your new mission. Your goal, as you're making your way through this level, is to destroy the Five Element Carts (i.e. war carts).
Note: To clarify, we destroyed some of the Five Element Carts as we proceeded to the end of the chapter. However, we did not periodically check back on the Pale-Axe Stalwart. Instead, we defeated this chapter's main boss, and then we went back to search for this NPC in other locations.
The first Five Element Cart: Brown-Iron Cart
Woods of Ember: Ashen Pass I/Camp of Seasons - Go up the steps past where you met the Pale-Axe Stalwart to encounter your first Five Element Cart. These war carts tend to have similar abilities:
- A fire breath directly in front.
- An area-of-effect explosion that damages anyone who's nearby.
- A mortar bombardment if you're further away.
The idea here is to climb on the ledges to your right so you can avoid the fire breath attack. You should then be able to jump down to hit its vulnerable spots.
The second Five Element Cart: Gray-Bronze Cart
Woods of Ember: Height of Ember - A bit later, you'll go through a cave with a narrow passageway at the end. This Black Myth: Wukong Five Element Cart has a fire breath covers the entirety of the ravine, so you have to hide at the nooks to the side. Once you're close enough, wail away at it to destroy it.
The third Five Element Cart
Furnace Valley: Valley Entrance - This war cart can be found at the right-hand side of the underground cavern with lava flows. For the sake of clarity, we didn't actually fight this war cart. It was already destroyed once we got there. However, we did pull the rope device on it several times.
Note: It seems that this objective is actually part of an NPC side quest involving the Horse Guai, Ma Tianba, which wasn't implemented fully in the review build that we were playing. In our playthrough, we simply pulled the rope device three times--we did not receive a reward, though this counted toward the Five Element Carts tally. However, for those who are playing the release build, you may need to find and rescue the Horse Guai in the previous chapters. You can refer to our transformations guide for more info.
The fourth Five Element Cart: Crimson-Silver Cart
Furnace Valley: The Emerald Hall - After the Keeper of Flaming Mountains boss fight in the Emerald Hall, continue up the slope until you come across this enemy. The difference now is that this siege weapon can spin around. It's such a cramped space so you better watch out for its attacks.
The Pale-Axe Stalwart's locations
We had already completed the main objectives in this region when we decided to tackle the remaining tasks for the Black Myth: Wukong Chapter 5 secret area quest. Assuming you've destroyed four out of five war carts, the idea now is to look for the Pale-Axe Stalwart. The NPC will move around whenever you talk to him and exhaust all dialogue.
- Woods of Ember: Ashen Pass - This is his initial location.
- Woods of Ember: Ashen Pass (cliff's edge) - After chatting with him for the first time, he'll move to the edge of the cliff. Be sure to exhaust all his dialogue and fast travel out of this area.
- Furnace Valley: The Emerald Hall - He'll be in the area where you fought the Crimson-Silver Cart.
- Field of Fire: The Cooling Slope - You gain access to this area once Pingping (i.e. the fox girl) uses the fan to clear the flaming barricades. This area can be reached via:
- Woods of Ember: Ashen Pass II - Instead of jumping down the pit to Furnace Valley, continue along the ridge until you see the large ice gateway.
- Field of Fire: Fallen Furnace Crater - Check out the clearing with even more spirit forms/elites after the flame barricade has dissipated.
The last Five Element Cart: Rusty-Gold Cart
When you approach the large ice doorway in the Cooling Slope, you'll see that the Pale-Axe Stalwart has been gravely wounded. This leads to a cutscene where you'll battle the Rusty-Gold Cart. Since this bout takes place in a wider area, be ready for a more mobile opponent with more aggressive flame-based abilities.
After defeating the Rusty-Gold Cart, you'll receive the Flame Orb curio/accessory. The Pale-Axe Stalwart will also turn to ash.
Destroying the ice gate in the Cooling Slope
The next portion of our Black Myth: Wukong Chapter 5 secret area guide deals with the Cooling Slope ice gateway. If you interact with it, a cutscene will play, whereupon the ice will shatter.
Before you is a great pillar, which will teleport you to the Bishui Cave secret area once you get close enough. Also, to your left, you'll find the Baw-Lang-Lang frog miniboss.
Bishui Cave - Boss fights, rewards, and points-of-interest
There are a few things of note in the Black Myth: Wukong Bishui Cave secret area in Chapter 5. Here's a quick summary:
- There's a Meditation Spot to the right of the first shrine.
- The first boss encounter is against Top Takes Bottom, Bottom Takes Top, the disc-rolling opponents in humanoid form, as opposed to the spiked ball that you tried to avoid in the "normal" realm.
- You can find a Celestial Pill on an altar after beating Top Takes Bottom, Bottom Takes Top.
- The spirit form of the Bull Governor can be yours. This elite is surrounded by others of his ilk.
Secret area final boss: Bishui Golden-Eyed Beast
The final chamber of the Bishui Cave secret area in Chapter 5 is guarded by the Bishui Golden-Eyed Beast. This monster has numerous devastating abilities, including rapid swipes, fireballs, flame breaths, and even a grab attack that tosses you straight into magma. If you manage to defeat it, you'll earn several rewards:
- Materials: 1x Bishui Beast Bit and 3x Bull King's Iron Horn - These are used to craft the Bishui Beast Staff weapon and the Bull King armor set, respectively.
- Bishui Beast Staff - +105 attack; +10% critical hit chance.
- Bull King's armor set (mythical rarity) - Has the highest total defense stat when all pieces are worn; has the Unyielding Resolve set bonus:
- Two-piece bonus: Temporarily grants a moderate defense buff upon taking damage.
- Four-piece bonus: Disables perfect dodges but grants the tenacity effect when your health below 50%.
- Curio: Daoist's Basket of Fire and Water - Moderately increases the attack power of all burn-inflicting and chill-inflicting transformations.
- Achievement: Frost and Flame
- Awaken Wine Worm - If you return to the boss' arena and enter the chamber that it was guarding earlier, you'll see a golden jar to your left.
Note that there are additional passageways and chambers beyond the area that the Bishui Beast was guarding, though we've yet to figure out if there are more things to discover here. In any case, that does it for our Black Myth: Wukong Chapter 5 secret area guide.
